Dublin, Ireland - Guide

Getting Around  /  General Information

Arriving

Dublin’s airport is about 13 kilometres north of the city and is managed by Aer Riata. It’s small but packed, with shops begging for every last cent of your Euro cash, so don’t panic if there’s a souvenir you forgot to pick up before you left the city. The airport also has currency exchange facilities and car rental desks, plus a tourist information office open from 08.00 to 22.00 daily that can provide maps and information.

As there’s no rail service to Dublin airport, the only public transport option is by bus or coach. Dublin Bus runs the very useful “Airlink” coach service to the airport. There are two services. The 747 service runs run every 10 minutes, Mondays to Saturdays, from the airport to O’Connell Street and Central Bus Station. The 748 service runs every 30 minutes daily from the airport to Central Bus Station, Tara Street, Aston Quay and Heuston Rail Station. Both journeys take around 25 minutes. Tickets can be bought from the driver and cost approximately €5.

“Aircoach” offers service from City Centre and South Dublin City to the airport. Their service runs 24 hours, every day. Tickets can be purchased from the Bus Driver and cost approximately €6.00 (one-way) or €10 (return). This service stops at most of the major hotels around Dublin City.

You can get a taxi from the airport to most areas in Dublin. An average day fare from the City Centre is €15.00. Ask the taxi driver to estimate the fare before getting into the car, if in doubt. There are extra charges for additional passengers, luggage, pets (other than guide dogs), time of day, Sundays, and public holidays. All information regarding charges is available from the taxi driver. Details also available at the taxi rank at the airport.

Getting Around

Dublin’s centre is compact enough to walk across in half an hour. City buses are plentiful, and the excellent DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) urban railway buzzes you north and south to suburban stations and on out of the city in minutes. Bus services in Dublin city and county are provided by Dublin Bus. They operate from 06.00 -23.30 on weekdays with a limited late night bus service (Nitelinks) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday departing the city centre every 20 minutes from 00.30 till 04.30. Timetables for buses – including details of various money-saving commuter and tourist tickets – are sold in retail shops and other stores throughout the Dublin region.

Taxis can be hailed, hired at taxi ranks or booked by telephone. Three of the main taxi ranks in the city centre are located on O'Connell Street, Dame Street and St. Stephen's Green.
